Cambridgeshire County Council's cabinet is expected to drop the on-street section in Huntingdon at a meeting on November 4, saving millions of pounds and preserving a part of the town's Riverside Park that would have disappeared under a bus lane.
Conservative councillors, who led the push to have the on-street section scrapped, said the decision would not affect the viability of the link between St Ives and Cambridge, which opens next spring, or the success of the on-street sections in Cambridge.
The guided bus link will still run through Huntingdon, but will use the roads with other traffic.
County councillor Jeff Dutton said: 'We are delighted to inform the residents of Hartford, Huntingdon and Hinchingbrooke that the on-street guided bus project is to be scrapped.'
District councillor Colin Hyams said: 'We want to preserve our green spaces and ensure they are for the benefit of the community.'
The move affects a bus lane running along Hartford Road, including a controversial stretch eating in to the Riverside Park, and a new bus lane junction at Hinchingbrooke Park in Huntingdon.
