The Labor parliamentarians mingled freely as the alcohol flowed and the tenor of the evening intensified. They were laughing, drinking and having a good old time , one observer told The Advertiser in Adelaide. As the talk among some of revellers veered blearily towards Thursday morning, that was seen as an overreaction. Talk quickly moved to leadership and change, of installing Foley as premier to reshape the cabinet, get rid of underperformers and make way for newcomers denied promotion by Rann.
Fanciful ministries were created and distributed to all and sundry as the conversations careered along. Foley denies it, but at one point he reportedly declared: I am ready to lead.
The 48-year-old Deputy Premier, a divorced father of two, has adapted to bachelorhood in recent years and become known as a man about town, allegedly linked to a string of attractive women.
While Rann would later put the coup-that-wasn't down to alcohol - people being tired and emotional - Foley denied alcohol played a significant part
