Demand high as glass recycling gets going
Oct 24 2008 Solihull News
AFTER just two weeks the Solihull Council's new glass collection service has been hailed as a resounding success.
More than 200 tonnes of glass have been collected since the scheme began on September 29 picking up bottles and jars from 78,000 homes.
Councillor Kate Wild, cabinet member for community services and the environment, has said that the scheme had enjoyed a very successful start.
Research carried out earlier this year suggested that glass was the ideal material to collect, following the introduction of a paper collection.
The glass collected from across Solihull can be crushed, melted and turned back into bottles and jars.
Alternatively the material can be used to resurface roads or turned into sand
