McDowell reads - Dollywood Foundation making a difference
Bluefield Daily Telegraph
The Dollywood Foundation's Imagination Library is continuing to set welcomed enrollment records in McDowell County. As a result, more and more youngsters in McDowell County are being exposed to the magic of reading. By developing a love of reading at an early age, we hope that it will become a passion that the youngsters will carry with them through their high school and adult years. Based on census data, there are 1,440 eligible children for Imagination Library in McDowell County. Since the launch of the program on June 1, 2007 nearly 1,500 children have registered with 1,122 currently participating and more than 375 children graduating beyond the years of eligibility, according to the West Virginia Department of Education and the Arts. The Imagination Library program provides books to families with children ages newborn to 5 and registers families through local public libraries. The McDowell County program is far exceeding national levels set by the Dollywood Foundation, which estimates that 70 percent of eligible children can be registered over a five-year period, according to Cabinet Secretary Kay Goodwin. Goodwin said McDowell County has surpassed the national estimates in only 16 months.Robin Taylor, the state program director of Imagination Library, is calling the McDowell County numbers 'breathtaking.' Goodwin said the response to the program from the citizens of McDowell County is proof that reading is important to families. As part of the Imagination Library program, a free age-appropriate book is mailed monthly to each registered child. As a result, newborns can receive up to 60 books before their fifth birthday. Children are registered by their parents or guardians who promise to read to the young people. McDowell County was the first of six counties in West Virginia to start an Imagination Library program

Both are expected to run for president in 2010. The Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers approved now state budget amendments to allocate funding for early parliamentary elections, the country s defense minister, Yuriy Yekhanurov, said earlier Thursday, but Madam Yulia Tymoshenko stated the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was ready to grant Ukraine a loan of between $3 billion and $14 billion to help the country overcome the financial crisis, though the credit would only be provided if the early elections were postponed. On 17th October Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko s office held a special meeting, with officials saying afterwards that they were working 'every hour' to liberate the Ukrainian sailors on board the ship. Relatives of 17 Ukrainians on the ship have collected money for the ransom, media reports said on Saturday. 'The negotiations are ongoing
