Oliver Stones latest film is well crafted and finely delivered by an outstanding cast; and like the president it portrays, is sure to make a lasting impression.

Far from perfect, Stones film is less about the presidency and more about the complex, dark and often disturbing relationship between Junior and his father and between W and his own personal demons.

Throughout the film, we find a man who born into a life of privilege who manages to succeed, with the help of his family connections, in spite of himself and excessive binge drinking, failed businesses and failed relationships.

The film begins with the president prepping for the now famed axis of evil 2002 State of the Union address with the help of his cabinet, Vice President Dick Cheney (Dreyfuss), Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove (Young), National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice (Newton), Secretary of State Colin Powell (Wright) and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld (Glenn).

If the men and women behind the president are the foundation W builds his legacy upon, it isnt long before we start to see the cracks in that foundation. Rumsfeld is overly bubbly and out-of-touch, Rice is little more than a groveling sycophant, Rove is disturbingly erudite, Powell is often the ignored voice of reason, and Cheney is a scheming, and perhaps even paranoid, war monger.

The film moves back and forth between 1966 and 2004, covering Bushs early years as a drunken frat boy at Yale, a Texas party hound, a failed bid for political office, his later conversion to born-again Christian and eventually his successful run for the presidency
