Govt team confers with parties on 'peace talks' preparations
Government's talks team on Sunday consulted with the representatives of all 25 political parties in the Constituent Assembly over the preparations being made for dialogue with armed groups operating in Terai and eastern hills.
During the discussion held at the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction in Singha Durbar, peace minister and head of government talks team, Janardan Sharma, said his team has so far established contacts with nine insurgent groups and is trying to reach out to other groups. He said the talks process would start 'soon'.
Speaking at the interaction, CPN (UML) leader Bhim Rawal advised the government team to first of all make a clear distinction between the political outfits and criminal groups because a number of insurgent groups in Terai are engaged in criminal activities.
Sarat Singh Bhandari, a Madhesi Janadhikar Forum leader, said that dialogue is the best way to end the crisis in Terai, but the government should be extremely cautious that the talks do not lead to disintegration of the nation

THE outspoken former Unions NSW boss John Robertson is expected to be placed in Nathan Rees's cabinet as police minister once the parliamentary session ends for the year.
Mr Robertson will be sworn into Parliament tomorrow. He will sit on the back bench in the upper house for the rest of the year but is likely to take over the police portfolio, which Tony Kelly inherited after Matt Brown resigned following revelations he had danced in his underwear.
A senior Labor source said Mr Robertson was expected to be given the position to ensure it remained in the upper house.
A Government source said Mr Robertson, who filled a casual vacancy left by the former treasurer Michael Costa, had a tough time ahead of him in caucus and would have to win over many from his Right faction who blamed him for helping to bring down the former premier, Morris Iemma, by leading the charge to defeat electricity privatisation
