The Socialist-led government and the central bank say the country's banking system, most of which is owned by European Union lenders, was solid and sound and that the key challenge to Bulgaria would be for the real economy.

The government has already lowered its forecast for GDP growth in 2009 to 4-5 percent from previous 6.5 percent, while industry leaders see the growth plummeting as low as 2 percent.

Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev has said the cabinet was considering also other measures in its 2009 budget to help the banks deal with the credit crunch and cushion the impact on the real economy.
