OTTAWA - Former Fredericton MP and federal cabinet minister Andy Scott hopes research on social policy can become more relevant to New Brunswick residents and their elected officials because of a new role he has accepted at the University of New Brunswick.

Scott starts Monday as the head of the Social Policy Research Network, with a two-year mandate to build a research centre that helps make a difference in the province.
For starters, the network will create an accessible database of current and ongoing research for use by the public, researchers and others

We ve got a government that I suspect is going to try to go down the same road to regionalization. We certainly have a government that has started taking people out of the process again.'
Alward also said that his caucus is working on establishing a party position regarding home heating assistance to bring into the legislature as winter approaches and New Brunswickers wait for the 'comprehensive package' for low-income residents that was promised by Premier Shawn Graham. But in regards to the Liberal government s proposal of a tax shift that would see a new provincial carbon tax created along with a two per cent increase to the HST that would fund income tax cuts, Alward did not take long to take a stand.
'I think the federal results are a pretty good indication of what people thought of that tax shift, and the carbon tax, the impact that would have been on each New Brunswicker because of increased costs for food, increase costs for fuel, increased costs for home heating.'
Alward said he is working with his MLAs to decide what reorganization of roles and responsibilities as critics.
He said he expects to see a cabinet shuffle soon to give new ministers a chance to take on their new portfolios before entering the fall sitting of the legislature.
'We want to have a chance to look at what the interests of individual MLAs are and what their experiences are and we ll move forward.'
