The trips were part of an aggressive strategy by the White House Office of Political Affairs to promote Republican candidates, according to the report by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Ninety-nine Republican candidates running for public office benefited from the visits, the report says.
In all, the White House office coordinated travel to 326 Republican events in the 10 months leading up to the elections. Officials from 12 cabinet agencies and three independent offices traveled to 35 states to make appearances, often at taxpayer expense.
The report does not indicate whether taxpayers footed the bill for travel costs associated with the two Wisconsin visits. Karen Lightfoot, a committee spokeswoman, said federal money likely was used for trips designated by agencies as official travel but not for trips the agency deemed political.
