New Delhi, Oct. 9: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is said to be opposed to ordering a judicial probe into the recent Jamia Nagar encounter in New Delhi as he feels this will only demoralise the police. He has conveyed these feelings to both the Congress leadership as well as his new Samajwadi Party allies.
Well-placed UPA and government sources said the matter had not come up at Wednesday s Cabinet meeting, but Dr Singh is said to be getting worried over the growing clamour for a thorough independent investigation into the Jamia Nagar encounter, in which two suspected Indian Mujahid-een members and a highly-decorated Delhi police inspector was killed. Samajwadi general secretary Amar Singh had earlier demanded a judicial probe, suggesting that the encounter might have been faked. Three Congress leaders Kapil Sibal, Salman Khurshid and Digvijay Singh had also suggested this at a meeting with Dr Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi. The Congress has officially rejected this demand.
